Renewing the Secondary Occupational Specialist Certificate

Application Responsibilities

The certificated educator has sole responsibility for maintaining current, valid Idaho certification. For renewal purposes, the applicant must meet current State Board of Education rule and Idaho statutory renewal requirements.

NOTE: The applicant is responsible for notifying the State Department of Education certification office of either a name change or change of address.

The renewal application and $75 fee may be submitted anytime between January 1 and August 31 of the year in which the certificate expires.

Application Process

A complete packet must include the following items:

1) Completed and signed application (Form C2 - Application for an Idaho Secondary Occupational Specialist, marked for renewal)

2) Application Fee - $75

  • Checks and money orders are to be made payable to State Department of Education. Credit cards are not accepted. Payment is non-refundable. Cash in exact amount will be accepted for walk-ins. Click here for customer service guidelines for walk-ins.

3) Attachments to the application for certification renewal:

  • Verification of credit hours, or equivalent, to meet renewal requirements
    • An applicant may not renew a Limited Occupational Specialist (LOS) certificate, but can submit a renewal application if the applicant meets qualifications to hold a Standard or Advanced Occupational Specialist certificate as follows:
      • Within the first eighteen (18) months of LOS certification, the holder must:

        • Complete either a pre-service workshop sponsored by the State Division of Professional-Technical Education or an approved course in professional-technical methods/student assessment.
        • Complete a new-teacher induction workshop at the state or district level.
        • File a Professional Development Plan for the period of the LOS with the State Division of Professional-Technical Education.
      • Within the three (3)-year period of the Limited Occupational Specialist certificate, the instructor must satisfactorily complete coursework which includes competencies in the following:
        • Principles and Foundations of Occupational Education (required); and
        • Methods of Teaching Occupational Education (required); and
        • two of the following three courses:
          • Career Pathways and Guidance; and/or,
          • Analysis, Integration and Curriculum Development; and/or,
          • Measurement and Evaluation.
      • To renew a Standard or Advanced Occupational Specialist certificate, an applicant must show:
        • the equivalent of six (6) credit hours; or
          • 90 inservice (conference, workshop) hours; or
          • 240 related back-to-industry hours; OR
          • a combination of the above, where 15 hours of inservice = 1 credit hour, and 40 hours of back-to-industry work = 1 credit hour
  • Verification of completion of the Professional Development Plan (PDP) and documentation of Professional Development Activities
    • Attach conference/workshop agenda and/or Certificate of Completion
  • Transcripts (if applicable) from the college or university demonstrating completion of additional postsecondary coursework during the validity period of the current certificate. Copies of transcripts will be accepted.
    • Recertification credits may not be carried over from one (1) renewal/recertification period to the next.
